As the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child, Youth Power Initiative in collaboration with over 50 NGOs stands with the global community to support girls’ progress everywhere.
Available data shows that there are 1.1 billion girls today, a powerful constituency for shaping a sustainable and better world for everyone. These girls are brimming with talent and creativity, But their dreams and potential are often being thwarted by discrimination, violence and lack of equal opportunities. There are glaring gaps in data and knowledge about the specific needs and challenges that girls face.
What gets counted, gets done. The theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, on October 11, “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress": A Global Girl Data Movement”, is a call for action for increased investment in collecting and analyzing girl-focused, girl-relevant and sex-disaggregated data.
One year into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, improving data on girls and addressing the issues that are holding them back is critical for fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals
One such issue that is standing in the way of girls’ progress is child marriage. Globally, one in seven adolescent girls aged 15 - 19 are currently married or in a union. In developing countries (except China), one in three girls get married before they turn 18. This derails the future of 47,700 girls everyday.
In developing countries, every day, over 20,000 girls under the age of 18 give birth (over 7 million in a year). But Educated girls are more likely to delay marriage and pregnancy.
Across the globe, the rates of child marriage are highest in sub-Saharan Africa, with 4 in 10 girls being married off before age 18.
Girls who are child brides miss out on education, and are more vulnerable to physical and sexual violence, and bear children before they are physically or emotionally prepared.
The cycle of violence that begins in girlhood, carries over into womanhood and across generations.
The 2030 Agenda must end this, address these needs and unlock their potential.
This is why we are collaborating with over 50 NGOs around the world to empower women and girls, and raise awareness on their rights, advocate for the adoption and implementation of laws and policies that prohibit and prevent Child Marriage, Female Genital Mutilation, Child Labor, Rape, Child Abuse, Trafficking, Teenage Pregnancy, Personal Hygiene, SRHR, and all forms of gender based violence, as well as advocating for quality education for the girl child and mobilize communities against the practice.
We call on World leaders to "do-the-talk" and let girls live and fulfill their potentials.
Part of the activities to celebrate #IDG2016 was an intriguing tweet chat organized and hosted by A World at School Global Youth Ambassador, Joy Tiku Enighe, the Founder of Youth Power Initiative.
Highlights of the TWEET chat in honour of girls and their rights on October 11 can be seen below.

A girl child education, is an education void of all forms of assault within or outside the home
we must ensure that various communities are sensitive to the affairs of a girl child
