OVER 200 public and private buildings and other property worth
millions of naira were on Monday evening destroyed by a heavy rainstorm
that hit the town of Owo, Ondo State.
Residents and leaders of the
community, which witnessed the first rain of the year after the storm,
have therefore, appealed to governments and concerned agencies to assist
them in rebuilding their town.
The duo of the state Commissioner
for Special Duties, Niran Sule-Akinsuyi and a community leader, Tayo
Aisida, whose family property were destroyed by the storm, said the
extent of damage was such that assistance is needed by the mainly
indigent population.
Bishop of Owo Circuit of the Methodist
Church, Solomon Abayomi Adegbite, who was inspecting the damage done to
the Saint Michael Church at Oke-Owo, said: “The congregation would
certainly need government’s support because of the storm that completely
destroyed our manse.”
Apart from buildings, many electric
poles were damaged, thereby causing non-supply of electricity to many
areas of the town, particularly Oke-Ogun Street and Ehin-Ogbe, where a
major road was rendered inaccessible by a damaged pole.
